Stegosaurus

  1. Name Meaning: The name Stegosaurus means "roofed lizard" or "plated lizard", referring to the large plates on its back.

  2. Time Period: Stegosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 155 to 150 million years ago.

  3. Size: It grew up to 30 feet (9 meters) long and about 14 feet (4 meters) tall.

  4. Weight: It weighed around 5 to 7 tons—about the same as an elephant!

  5. Brain Size: Stegosaurus had a very small brain—about the size of a walnut—for its large body.

  6. Plates: It had 17 bony plates along its back, which may have been used for display, thermoregulation, or defense.

  7. Tail Spikes: Its tail had 4 sharp spikes, called the "thagomizer", likely used for defense against predators.

  8. Diet: Stegosaurus was herbivorous, feeding mostly on low-lying plants like ferns, cycads, and mosses.

  9. Teeth: It had small, flat teeth suited for grinding soft vegetation—not for chewing tough plants.

  10. Posture: It walked on four legs (quadrupedal), with its back legs longer than its front legs.

  11. Speed: It was a slow mover, likely walking at about 4–5 mph (6–8 km/h).

  12. Defense Strategy: Besides using its tail spikes, its thick skin and intimidating plates might have helped keep predators like Allosaurus at bay.

  13. Fossil Discovery: First discovered in Colorado in 1877 by Othniel Charles Marsh, a famous paleontologist.

  14. Brain Myth: Early scientists mistakenly believed it had a "second brain" near its hips—now known to be a nerve center.

  15. Symbolic Dino: Stegosaurus is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs and is the state dinosaur of Colorado.
